Project presentations and Postojna cave

Thursday, 24.10.24: Project presentations and Postojna cave

Project presentations at the school SSGTLJ
On Thursday, the day before returning home from Ljubljana, we worked with Slovenian students to create presentations. Each small group consisted of two Austrian and two Slovenian students. The presentations summarized what we had learned during our week in Slovenia. For example, we compared sweet water from Lake Cerknica and saltwater from the Adriatic Sea under a microscope. We had two hours to prepare our script and PowerPoint, after which we presented them to the entire class. (Olga, Lea)

Cave of Postojna
In 1872, the world’s first railway in a stalactite cave opened in Postojna Cave. To enter, you first travel 3.7 km on a small train, where you can even see a Murano glass chandelier. Due to smoke from charcoal oft he former trains, the stalactites and stalagmites along the ride are black. Our guide advised us not to touch the geological formations, as oils from our skin can prevent future limescale deposits. We also visited the cave olms, which can live up to 100 years and survive for years without food. They primarily live in cave waters, breathing through external gills or primitive lungs.
It was really fascinating to see such a big cave. The cave olms were also very interesting but you had to look carefully because they can adapt themselves to the surroundings. (Constanze, Yezda, Alina, Yaren)
